Edible East End – Winter, 2009
Behind the Bottle
For all intents and purposes, John Medolla is new to the wine biz and on paper might seem like a most unlikely architect of a new and very good merlot. After 30 years in the aviation industry, he and his wife, Denise, took the plunge in 2002—problem was, they had no vines, no winemaking equipment, no facility in which to make the magic happen. But with the memory of his Neapolitan grandmother burning in his brain, he didn’t let the little things get in the way. - Amy Zavatto

Standouts at a Showcase
My favorite red was Medolla’s bouncy, fairly light 2003 merlot ($15.99), which John Medolla, the owner, made with Eric Fry at Lenz. It exudes tobacco, graphite and anise and seems perfectly balanced.- Howard G. Goldberg

The Wine Spectator – July 31 2007 – Rated 88 points
"This fresh red delivers black cherry and plum fruit, with notes of chocolate, licorice and olive. The firm tannins are well integrated, and the lively acidity keeps this red juicy. Drink now through 2009" - T.M. |

Newsday – July 25, 2007
"One of the newer additions to Long Island wine country is Medolla Vineyards. And the 2002 Medolla Merlot arrives as a food-friendly, satisfying red.
The Medolla family made wine in Campania before moving to Red Hook and now to Peconic. John and Denise Medolla's old-vines merlot is a medium-bodied production with fine fruit, a suggestion of cherry, and the promise of inviting wines to come." - Peter Gianotti |

The Italian Tribune – July 12, 2007
The roots of the Medolla family- and of their dedication to producing top quality wines from grapes that are meticulously grown and cared for- are found at the base of Mount Vesuvius in Italy-“ My family used the Piedi Rosso (red foot) grape and has legend has it the Moscato grape as well” John says. It’s the intense passion for the craft of making wine that allows all small-scale producers to realize their dreams and continue their family traditions. As such winemakers John and Denise Medolla exemplify their company’s ideal by celebrating their heritage and the dreams of their forebears through their relationship with fine wine. |

New Tastes From the North Fork
Denise and John Medolla trace their interest in wine to their Italian forebears, particularly Mr. Medolla's Neapolitan maternal grandmother. Medolla's 2002 merlot is earthy, gutsy, sultry and all around satisfying. - Howard G. Goldberg
